Assuming that the Japanese bypassed the Phillippines the U.S. would probably not have gone to war with Japan. U.S. public sentiment at the time would not have supported going to war unless the U.S. was directly threatened/attacked. For example getting a U.S. fleet sunk or several thousand soldiers killed.

The peace movement was so strong that without an overt act of aggression against the US, no FDR could not have gotten the US into the war. Remember FDR wanted to get the US into the conflict as early as possible, 39 or 40. But the opposition was so strong that it would have been political suicide and then Congress would not have gone along. This is the reason so many people continue to speculate that FDR knew about the coming attack on Pearl and did nothing to prevent it, other than to insure the carriers were at sea. This has never been proven, but that is part of the strength of a conspiracy, that there will be no evidence. If the Japanese had listened to Admiral Yamamoto, then instead of attacking Pearl, they would have instead focused closer to home. They could have used these assets to attack Australia, or better for them would have been to have troop ships along to have invaded Pearl after the attack. If they had done this, then things would also have been different. Many of the damaged ships were repaired and did sail against Japan to exact revenge. Without Pearl, it would have made the US' job more difficult.

Being English, served in the British army during WW 2 and having lived in the US for 36 years; my memory is of a United States at that time being predominantly isolationist. I believe Washington would not have voted for active participation. Thank goodness for the support we did receive in material and the few Americans who volunteered to served in our armed forces.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the single greatest blunder of Japan. To be sure, The United States would not have entered the war as early as we did.The consequence of our failure to become involved as a result of the Japanese not attacking Pearl Harbor could have resulted in a total defeat of the Allies. How could that have happened?

It was not just Pearl Harbor that was attacked that day. American bases streched across the Pacific Ocean, form the Johnston Atoll, to Wake Island, the Phillipeins, and other out-posts like American Somoa, and Guam. These out-posts of the American Empire could not be left in the back side of invading Japanese Forces because America was hostile to the foreign policy of Japan.

Japan made a fundamental mistake by failing to conspire with the Nazis and Adolf Hitler. If they had corrodinated with the Nazi Germany it might have been possible for history to go another way. Each of the Axis Powers, Italy, Japan, and Germany had important and valuable assets which might have contributed to a final victory. Still, it is clear now, as it was to the Japanese at the time, that they lacked specific military hardware to successfully act in concert with their allies in a concerted and combined attack on the target which would have done them all the most good: Russia. However, Who the target should have been is open to question had it been given more thought, but Russia is the first nation projected forward. Consideration might have gone into a completely different and creative plan for world conquest. Escaping a Euro-centric view might have lead to consideration of more sensible plans much more likely to succeed. Why not launch in to Africa, or South America? Proceeding up through Central America to North America? How else was the United States to be defeated? Russia was a useful tool for all the Axis Powers. It really makes no sense to have attacked them when they were already providing millions of tons of raw materials to the Axis. They were isolated already and could have been delt with later.

The Japanes had already had some action against Russian Forces, and quickly discovered that their machines and weapons were not up to the task for land warfare. They needed to vastly improve their weapons. Japanese tanks were very thin skinned and quite susceptable to even the lightest allied tanks. Russian tanks, cannons, and infantry weapons easily outclassed the Japanese weapons. The Japanese quickly gave up on the notion of attacking Russia. What they should have done was call for a combined meeting with the other Axis Powers. Trading technology and improving war plans.

Some people would speculate that the US would have never entered World War II. Other people would say that war was inevitable. The US was headed straight for war with Germany and Japan long before December 7, 1941. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in a (misguided) attempt to scare the Americans out of the war, not to get them into it. The United States probably would not have joined the war.

Well personally i think WWII was already going on. But The U.S. was unsure of its standing in the War, and FDR did not want to get involved. so its my opinion that if japan had not attacked pearl harbor, then the U.S. would not have entered the war. And if U.S. did not enter the war. Britain would not have received the help they needed in Normandy to help push the Germans back begint o get control of France once again. So in theory... If Japan hadnt attacked the U.S. The axis powers would have won the war. Crazy to think about don't ya think?

Probably, the US would have entered WW2 by other means. The US had entered WW1 because of Germany's "un-restricted submarine warfare" policies. Had the US entered WW2, and Pearl Harbor not been attacked; then VERY LIKELY the US Navy would have fought the Japanese Navy (Imperial Navy) with obsolete battleships (which would exist...since they were not sunk at Pearl Harbor); consequently the US Navy would have LOST the Battles of Coral Sea, Midway, and the many sea battles surrounding the Guadalcanal and Solomon Island chains.

The United States would eventually have joined England in fighting off Hitler. The mindset of the Americans at the time was clouded with memories of World War 1. President Roosevelt would have managed to get the Americans to realize war in Europe was nothing like the previous war. It would have taken time. You have to realize they did not have television to see what was happening to the English and other Europeans. They had radio, newspapers and movie theater clips. There was no internet, global phone coverage or satellites. Communicating the truth to the masses took time. Eleanor Roosevelt tried to explain to the Americans in her daily column the plight of the Jews. It did not register. Roosevelt was very persistent and he would have prevailed. Another thing that would have motivated the Americans was the sinking of their ships. When enough had been sunk they would have become furious and wanted to get even with the Germans.

It's hard to say for sure, but the U.S. was making a huge effort to stay neutral. So, unless an event of similar magnitude had occurred, the U.S. probably wouldn't have become involved.
