The Spanish culture has been imbedded into the Amerindian culture so deeply, and for so long that the culture of Mexico today has evolved into a mixture of both. 60-75% of the population are Mestizos, meaning of mixed Spanish and Amerindian ancestry. The official language is Spanish, although in the rural areas the original Indain language is still spoken. It has the world's largest population of Catholics after Brazil [89%]. The architecture of the Basilica of Guadalupe, the Metropolitan Cathedral , the basic design of most Mexican towns, a central plaza with an adjacent church are designs bought from Spain. Traditional music and Fiestas are a blend of both cutures, even in the food there is a blend of traditional Indian and Spanish-Bunuelos, Lomo e Adobo, Chillie rellenos,Quesadills and Guacamole. Bull fighting, which originated in Spain, is as much a part of the Mexican Culture as Soccer. So, although there are still Spanish influences present in modern Mexico, the Mexican people have grown their culture into one which accepts the past, but see themselves as not Spanish or Indian but Mexican.

Assuming the question is about the ethnic breakdown, unlike other European powers, the Spanish made lasting alliances with some of the local populations -- such as the Tlaxcalans, in order to destroy the Aztec civilization -- resulting in interracial marriages with Native Americans. The result was the mestizo population, which nowadays conforms the majority of the Mexican population, accounting between 60 and 80% of the total population. The rest include Native Americans or Amerindians with 10 to 30% of the population, and the descendants of many European ethnicities, accounting for 9 to 17% of the population.

Originally (before 1521 AD), Mexico was populated by more than 90 native American groups of many denominations, including Nahuatl, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomi and Totonac.

Then, with the help of more than 100,000 warriors provided by the Tlaxcalan Lordship (who were bitter enemies of the Aztecs), and a terrible smallpox epidemic brought by Hernan Cortes' crew, he could defeat the Aztec Empire, eventually conquering present-day Mexico.

After the conquest, a steady process of cultural and racial integration between the conquerors, their allies and the conquered peoples happened. Also, after the region was devastated by smallpox, the Spanish were forced to "import" thousands of African slaves into Mexico to extract the vast Natural Resources found in the new colony.

All of this resulted in an present-day, ethnic breakdown of 60-80% of the population being considered mestizo, or a mix of European and Native American. Then, 10-30% are descendants of the original Native Americans who inhabited Mexico before the arrival of Europeans. Another 9 to 17% are "Criollo" Mexicans, mostly of Spanish descent, but Americans and other Europeans are also considered as such. Another 2% are Afro-Mexicans who descend from the original salves brought from Africa. The remaining population (<2%) includes Middle Eastern and Asian people who immigrated into Mexico after its independence in the 19th century.

When Spain came to Mexico to govern it, some Spanish people had relationships with Mexican people. By that, Mexico developed the Spanish language.
