Seismologists require:

  • The exact location of the seismometer station
  • The P and S-wave arrival times as recorded on a seismometer
  • Knowledge of the subsurface geology
  • The same information for two other seismometer stations

Knowledge of the sub surface geology is required in order to estimate the P and S-wave velocity which is a function of the elastic modulus and density of the rock.
