As Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the series, a large amount of information was released in later books and interviews. The series wasn't as popular then so J.K. Rowling was giving less interviews and being asked less questions.
We did later find out that Quirrell, who only appears in this book, was previously the Muggle Studies teacher at Hogwarts and that he was a half-blood in Ravenclaw house.
Harry Potter is a described as small and skinny for his age. He has messy jet black hair, green eyes and a thin lighting bolt shaped scar on his forehead. Harry wears black round glasses that were held together by cellotape after being broken by his cousin. His clothes are often several sizes too large, until he buys his own.
Ron Weasley is tall with ginger hair, blue eyes and lots of freckles. His clothes are fairly worn and can often be a little too small for him.
Hermione Granger has lots of bushy brown hair, large front teeth and brown eyes.
