Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 - April 12, 1975) was an American expatriate entertainer and actress. She became a French citizen in 1937. Most noted as a singer, Baker also was a celebrated dancer in her early career. She was given the nicknames the "Bronze Venus" or the "Black Pearl", as well as the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations. In France, she has always been known as "La Baker". Baker was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture, to integrate an American concert hall, and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (she was offered the leadership of the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, but turned it down), for assisting the French Resistance during the Second World War and being the first American-born woman to receive the highest French military honor, the Croix de Guerre, and for being an inspiration to generations of African American female entertainers and others. As one of the most prolific contemporary jewelry designers, Suzanna Dai embodies that old adage on genius being 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Dai finds a muse and lets her imagination lead her hands to create new levels of art. For Dai, inspiration can take any form: a place, a time, a person- and like a true artist, she knows how to put in the hours to make her dreams a reality. Her Cordoba collection is a work of genius and was inspired by one of the world's most remarkable icons, Josephine Baker.

Who better to inspire such an eclectic collection than the iconic singer Josephine Baker? Her style was a blend of Art Deco with European influences. Baker was all about the jewelry, and less about the clothing, (in some instances, it was all jewelry and no clothing). Despite her tremendous talent, Josephine never succeeded in acquiring the same adulation stateside as she received in Europe. Her style was too audacious, too confident for conservative America in the early Twentieth century.

Ms. Josephine Baker doin' the Charlston

Suzanna Dai's Cordoba collection is a line of colorful, confident pieces; vermillion and gold accented by bold black jet beads. The fan shaped earrings are reminiscent of the earrings Josephine wore when she was photographed in the lavish stage costume she wore during her performance in Danse banane, from the Folies Bergère production Un Vent de Folie in Paris, 1927.

Drawn from a place and an era where exhibitionism was encouraged, Suzanna Dai has created a line of jewelry that allows women to express their own inner exhibitionists. Creating a spectacle is a lost art form and as the iconic Ms. Baker said "Art is an elastic sort of love."
