A fuller was the person who cleaned and thickened freshly woven cloth, especially wool, back in the olden days, in order to remove impurities (grease, dirt, etc.) and make the cloth ready to use. To "full" the cloth meant to clean and thicken it. The word "fuller" comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning "white." Fullers have existed since the days of the Roman Empire at least, and probably earlier. Methods of fulling have varied with place and time. There is a lot of traditional vocabulary and tradition associated with the profession. To "full" a sweater yourself, wash it in hot water in your washer. The wool will thicken up and become cleaner. Once something is thickened by fulling, it cannot be unthickened.
