Many tactics were employed, ranging from devious scare campaignswhereby federal agents made arrangements with metropolitannewspaper editors to print articles warning of imminent immigrantsweeps to offering free one-way train travel to Mexico for thosewho would leave voluntarily. The results of these… governmentalefforts was the involuntary deportation and "coerced" voluntaryrepatriation of over half a million Mexican immigrants and theirnative born children, who were legally American citizens. Thisprogram gave rise to the largest government-initiated deportationeffort in American history. More than anything else, thedeportation of hundreds of thousands of Mexicans and MexicanAmericans demonstrated vividly that they were "second class"citizens (for those born in the U.S.) at best, and an expendablegroup of foreign workers who constituted a social problem to beeliminated.
