Stands for "Basic Input/Output System."
BIOS is a program that starts when you turn on your computer. It checks all of your hardware, hard drive, CD ROM, cards, etc. to ensure they all have power and are working. It has several different categories, you can see your BIOS by paying attention to the screen when it first starts up. When you see "hit f2 for system" or something to that affect then hit the key and you will go into your BIOS. Just DO NOT make any changes, it will screw up your computer big time if you do not know what it all entails.
BIOS is the base level programming on the motherboard which enables boot up to a hardware device, like a hard drive or CD-Rom, as well as maintains computer dates/times and several other settings.
Basic Input / Output System
It is the hardwired (burned onto EPROM) software that conducts the power-on self test, checks the hardware configuration and starts the boot sequence (loads boot sector of the hard drive and executes it (usually)).
Basic Input/Output System, which is the start up system that tells your computer which hard drive to boot from, which language to use...etc.

BIOS is a program (stored in ROM), not a memory. However the BIOS uses a battery backed up RAM to store a variety of settings and parameters. This BIOS RAM is itself volatile (it can only store data when powered), however the battery backup provides power to this RAM when the main power of the computer is off (making it act as if it were nonvolatile). When this battery dies the BIOS RAM will lose its data and (after the battery is replaced) the machine may have to be reconfigured from scratch before the machine will startup correctly.
The letters in the word BIOLOGY do not "stand for" anything. The word means "the study of life" because it is composed of Latin "bios" meaning "life" and "logy" meaning "study of." It is not an acronym for anything.
