The Amazon region is the largest and probably the oldest forest area in the world, it also ascends the slopes of the Andes until it merges with subtropical and temperate regions. On its southern border it mixes with the woodlands of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, with galleries of trees extending along the rivers. Consisting of enormous trees, some exceeding a height of 300 feet, the rain forest is composed of an almost incredible number of species growing side by side in the greatest profusion and arranged in different strata. There are about 2,500 species of Amazonian trees. The Brazilian highland is covered mostly with vegetation Atlantic Plateau, extending all along the eastern coast of Brazil. It was once almost completely covered by the Atlantic Rainforest, one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world, of which only 7.3% remains. Southern Plateau, advancing inland in the southern and southern-central portions of the country. Large portions of this region were also covered by the Atlantic Rainforest, while araucaria highland forest and cerrado grasslands took up much of the rest. Central Plateau, occupying the central portions of Brazil. Approximately 85% was once covered by cerrado vegetation, of which only a small portion remains intact.

1) vegetation in Savannah (Savannah / Campos) - occurs mostly in the Midwest, appearing also in the northern Amazon, from the river valley Tacatu (Roraima) to the trays of Amapá, on the coast and interior of the Northeast plateau sedimentary basin of Parana, in the southeastern region, in southern areas of the Southern Plateau.

2) steppe (Caatinga and Campaign Gaucho) - In the barren steppe the northeastern hinterland (known as caatinga) corresponds to several vegetation types that constitute a kind of deciduous vegetation, with various cacti. The other area of steppe in southern Brazil is Brazil, on the borders with Uruguay and Argentina, Gaucho is the Campaign, which covers the surfaces of the campaign kept the plateau and the depression of Ibicui and Black.

3) The Savannah steppe (Chaco vegetation, fields of Roraima and Campaign Gaucho) - A type of vegetation consists of a tree cover and various cacti, a grassy covering. In Brazil occupies three very different areas geographically, the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Roraima and Fields Campaign Gaucho. The first is between the Sierra Bodoquena (Mato Grosso do Sul) and Rio Paraguay, the largest area of occurrence in Brazil this kind of vegetation. The second, Roraima (limits with Venezuela), appears between the dissected areas of Mount Roraima and the plain of the Rio Branco. And the third occupies the south-southeast of Rio Grande do Sul, part of the Campaign Gaucho.

4) woody oligotrophic vegetation of the marshes and sand accumulations (Campinarana) - This vegetation type is restricted to areas of the Amazon Rio Negro and its tributaries adjacent overlying the depressed areas and embrejadas characterized by clusters of woody formations tall and thin.

5) dense rain forest (Amazonian Forest / Atlantic Forest) - occupies part of the Amazon, stretching along the coast from the south of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte to the Holy Spirit, between the coast and the mountains that border the Precambrian the Atlantic, extending further down the slopes to the region of Osório, Rio Grande do Sul Atlantic Forest has been almost completely deforested, leaving only few places where the original forest. This type of vegetation in two areas (the Amazon and Atlantic) consists of trees that range from medium to large size and typical genera that characterize them.

6) open rain forest (Transition Forest) - It is located between the Amazon and the area outside the Amazon. It consists of more widely spaced trees with little shrub layer dense. This is a transitional vegetation between the humid Amazon rainforest to the west, east dry savanna and semi-humid savanna in the south. Phytoecological dominates this region, mainly the states of Maranhao and Piaui, appearing also in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte.

7) Araucaria Forest (Forest of Pines) - This type of vegetation, also known as "forest of pine trees or pines, are found concentrated in the Southern Plateau, in the highest elevations and cooler, with some isolated occurrences in the mountains of Sea and Mantiqueira (upper parts). Noteworthy are the genera Araucaria, Podocarpus, and others of less importance.

8) semideciduous forest (Mata semicaducifólia) - This type of vegetation is linked to weather stations, a tropical, with summer rains and severe drought, and other subtropical without dry season but with physiological drought caused by the cold of winter. Brazilian occur in areas with these climate types.

9) deciduous forest (deciduous forest) - Occurs in Brazil dispersively and without continuity, since it only appears in areas characterized by two well defined seasons, wet and dry. The upper stratum is predominantly deciduous (lose their leaves during the dry season).

10) Areas of pioneer formations of marine influence (salt marsh vegetation and mangrove) - Areas of influence are represented by marine offshore bars and sand banks or dunes that occur along the coast. Are formed by deposition of sand, then place since grasslands to trees. Mangroves are influenced fluvialmarine where vegetation is born a brackish environment also presents physiognomy of trees and shrubs and are found in almost the entire Brazilian coast, but the highest concentrations appear in the north coast and virtually disappear from the southern island of Santa Catarina because it is typical of tropical coastal vegetation.

11) Areas of pioneer formations or fluvial influence (Alluvial Vegetation) - A type of vegetation that occurs in areas of accumulation of the courses of rivers, ponds or the like, the vegetation type can be trees, shrubs or herbaceous, forming over the the courses of rivers Matas-Galleries. The vegetation that is installed varies depending on the intensity and duration of flooding.

12) Areas of ecological tension (Contacts between vegetation types) - are well known contact regions between major vegetation types, each type guard their identity. It occurs in various locations, including the Pantanal wetlands, flooded periodically in free and floods. There exist several plant associations such as palms, grasses and woods Chaco.

13) Ecological Refuge (Campos de altitude) - Any type of vegetation different from the general context of the flora of the region is considered as an "ecological refuge." This is the case of vegetation that is located in Brazil, above 1800m altitude
