Canada is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as the official head of state (represented by the Gov. General). The effective government is derived from the majo…rity party in the House of Commons, the nationally elected body that creates the government (Prime Minister and Cabinet). Canada is a confederation of 10 provinces. In 1867, the original group consisted of 4 British colonies in North America: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Other colonies joined in the 19th century - British Columbia, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island. In 1905, 2 new provinces were created from the Northwest Territory - Alberta and Saskatchewan. The last province of Newfoundland was transferred from the UK to Canada in 1949. Provincial governments manage a significant portion of the management of the country (education, healthcare, business law); the federal government manages external affairs (defence and trade), national standards, natural resources, and interprovincial transportation.
