You cannot do an Autoformat on a cell. Autoformat applies to tables, enabling you to apply a choice of styles of formatting to the table, applying different formatting to headings, the data and the formulas.

What should the Save As file type be if saving Excel?

That will depend on what you want to do. If you are in Excel saving as a standard Excel file, you don't need to change the file type. It is only if you want to save into a different format, that you would change the File Type. What you change it to, would depend on what you need. You might want to change to a different version of Excel or maybe into a completely different format, such as a text file. If you are working in a different application, saving something to be used in Excel, then again it will depend on what format you actually need.

How do you deal with an error message pivot table created in a later version of Excel and can not be updated?

Unfortunatly, you will need to find a more current version of Excel to access the pivot table. After you do, save the file in compatible format for older version of Excel. Then you should be able to open the file and update the pivot table. However, if someone created the pivot table with Excel 2007 and used any of the new features, those features will be lost when you save in Excel 2003 format. See related links for a method to change the default for Excel 2007 to save pivot tables in the older classic format for Excel 2003 and earlier.
