The mood of Poe's writing is dark, sinister, but more importantly tragic. Poe was plagued throughout his life by the death of loved ones, many of tuberculosis--he is desperate to let go of the terrible weight of these losses, but his writing reflects a yearning to participate in the afterlife, to blame someone, anyone for the death of his loved ones. Grief, not evil or insanity was the driving force behind most of Poe's work, namely Annabelle Lee and the Raven.
