Excel is a spreadsheet program. It's mainly used fro manipulating figures. for example, a teacher could use it to list all the pupils in her class, along with their homework marks - and see at a glance who's the brightest student.

To add to that, it's a powerful tool for listing, indexing, calculating, manipulating and displaying all sorts of text and numerical data for administrative, scientific and engineering purposes - though some of its graph-plotting routines leave much to be desired!
