If this is a basic IT question, then the answer is "Microsoft Word is a word processing program, which means it is used on computers for producing, editing and reading material that is basically presented as written words, as opposed to spoken word (audio), pictures or videos (visual material) or figures."
You might add that all these forms of material can be included (or "embedded") within a Word document, but Word is oriented towards handling the written word.
If this is a "market" question, then the answer is slightly different. Microsoft Word is a word processing program which was originally produced to meet the needs of the office user. Many of its features still show that commercial bias - take a look at the templates, and the examples in the help files.
However, with the growth of home computers, many people who used Word in the office wanted to have the program they were familiar with on the home computer. In this context Word became a familiar part of the home PC, despite Microsoft's attempts to promote its "Works" suite as the low-cost alternative for the home.
Later schools started teaching students to use the software they might need in the world of work - which (after a few years when WordPerfect was a good alternative) meant teaching Word, as it was by far the commonest word processing program in the office environment.
That eventually led to schools thinking how much easier it would be to mark essays printed out, and not waste time trying to read students' increasingly poor handwriting. So Word was wheeled into service to produce homework - which is where the original answerer came in!
It is also now used for many other domestic tasks and many home PCs - and Apple Macs - now have Microsoft Word as a central part of their utilitarian functions. (As opposed to games). Attempts to make Word a good place for creating material for the web have consistently failed, however.
Microsoft Word, part of the Microsoft Office suite, is used to produce electronic documents, incorporating text, graphics, and tables. Some of the most popular and useful tools of Microsoft Word include spell and grammar checker, thesaurus, and integrating citations and references.
