A MAC address (also called an Ethernet address or an IEEE MAC address) is a number (typically written as twelve hexadecimal digits, 0 through 9 and A through F, or as six hexadecimal numbers separated by periods or colons, i.e. 0080002012ef, 0:80:0:2:20:ef) which uniquely identifes a computer that has an Ethernet interface. Unlike the IP number, it includes no indication of where your computer is located. In DHCP's typical use, the server uses a requesting computer's MAC address to uniquely identify it.
It is a unique number which is assigned to every piece of technology.

A MAC address is the serial number of a network card - or a similar identification number used in other machines, including switches and routers.

A switch is supposed to forward a frame only to the port (or interface) where the destination is connected. To do this, the switch consults its MAC address table - a table which lists which MAC address is connected to which port. The switch gets this information from previous transmissions done by the computers that communicate between themselves. Initially (for example, after a restart) the switch doesn't have this information, so it has to send frames out of all its ports.

Every piece of hardware that is capable of talking to the internet (the WiFi board or the Ethernet board) has built into it a number that uniquely identifies it. This number is used by the LAN to identify which machines have been assigned which IP addresses and it is called the MAC address.

Try this:- (Windows operating system)

1) Open a terminal window (Run - cmd)

2) in the terminal windows type "ipconfig/all"

This will print out the MAC addresses in use on your computer)

No. Hubs simply repeat all the Ethernet frames on all ports and do not interfere with the source or destination MAC addresses and as such do not need their own MAC address.
