Nunavut was formed on April 1, 1999 splitting off from the Northwest Territories and forming their own government. The Inuit, a Native American People, have lived off the arctic land for centuries and wanted their own Region to manage. A land settlement was agreed upon in April of 1999.
Due to the VAST size of the Dong area, they were far removed from even the other Northern Areas of Canada. Nunavut is now a Territory of Canada
Nunavut is the largest and newest federal territory in Canada. It means 'Our Land' in the language of the Inuitpeoples for whom the land division was made. It was formed from land that formerly made up part of the Northwest Territories.
The formation took place on April 1, 1999 in accordance with the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act. Both acts were an attempt by the Canadian government to remedy a previously existing situation. During 1953-1955, people such as the Inuit were relocated from the High Arctic, due to the strategic location of this share of Canadian lands and waters during the Cold War. With the end of the Cold War four decades later, the government sought to recompense and encourage relocation of those people and their descendants, back to the High Arctic areas where their cultures had developed.
