Pseudo food would be what is popularly known as "junk food". These items add calories and fat, but do little to maintain health. They provide few nutrients, too much salt, and are not healthy to consume in large quantities.

Surprisingly, these foods are based on home made products which are made with wholesome ingredients. Such things as cakes, cookies, and pies are made at home without added preservatives or artificial ingredients. While the manufactured items might look the same, the added chemicals negate most of the health benefits of the items made at home. The differences can be startling after reading the ingredients list of the manufactured item.

Should you choose to make these items at home, it would be wise to even investigate the ingredients with which you make them. Various flours, oils, and sweeteners can and are altered chemically to "preserve" them. It can be an eye opening experience to shop for flour for instance. In most cases, flour is bleached, the bran removed (and sold separately), and chemicals added to prolong shelf life. If you are concerned about such matters, it might be wise to shop for your ingredients in a whole foods or health food shop.
