A "T1" line is a type of telephone trunk line (line connecting exchanges: e.g. central office, PBX, toll, long distance) that uses T-carrier signaling. It was first introduced in 1962 in the Bell System in North America, and could transmit up to 24 telephone calls simultaneously over a single twisted pair of copper wire. It was the first telephone trunk line that used digital signaling to multiplex calls instead of analog frequency division multiplexing and operates at 1.544 Mbit/s line rate per single twisted pair.
