Released by Ultravox in 1983, 'Vienna' is an enigmatic song whose meaning is difficult to fathom out. It's based around a young couple who are staying in Vienna and whose relationship you get the impression is undergoing severe difficulties. It focuses upon the atmopshere of the city on a cold, grey misty Winter's morning, very early when nobody's about- the boy is brooding about the future of their troubled partnership as they lie in their room, sometimes drifting away into thinking about the city's rich cultural and musical history or focusing on the things about him in the bedroom, but then suddenly snapping back to hard reality and the future of their love. He declares that Vienna and all of it's glories mean nothing to him unless his relationship with the girl has a future.
