Canada discontinued making cents (pennies) in 2013 due to their low value and unprofitable manufacturing costs. The composition has changed many times over the years. The primary compositions were as follows:
2000-2012: 94% steel, 1.5% nickel, 4.5% copper plating
1997-1999: 98.4% zinc, 1.6% copper plating
1978-1996: 98% copper, 1.75% tin, 0.25% zinc
1942-1977: 98% copper, 0.5% tin, 1.5% zinc
1876-1941: 95.5% copper, 3% tin, 1.5% zinc
1858-1859: 95% copper, 4% tin, 1% zinc
The nickel is made out of 94.5% steel, 2% nickel, and 3.5% copper. The nickel used to be made fully out of nickel but it got to expensive so they changed it to the things above.
MoreIt depends on the date:While the ratios changed slightly, pennies dated up through 1996 were primarily copper, with a small percentage of tin and zinc. 1997-99, they were solid zinc with a copper coating. 2000-12, it changed to copper-coated steel, with a touch of nickel. The cent was discontinued in 2013.
Prior to 2001 pennies were made from copper, or a copper-nickel alloy; since 2001 they have been made of copper plated steel.
There are two types of Canadian 1859 pennies based on the Metallurgy:
