What does the femur bone do in the human bone?

The femur runs from the hip to the knee. The bone is marked by a crease at the back called the linea aspera, where muscles controlling walking motions attach.

The condyle (bony knob) on the proximal (closer to the body's center) end of the femur is the thickest, most dense piece of bone in the body and serves as the means for fitting the leg into the pelvis. Because of its density, it is not uncommon for it to be the last remnant of body tissue remaining intact after the rest of a cadaver has long since turned to dust.

One could also say the femur serves as a target for large caliber handguns. The only efficient purposes for a 44 caliber handgun, a .357 Magnum or similar weapon are to: 1.) Kill a person 2.) Serves as a prop while threatening to kill someone, or 3.) Shatter a person's femur, immediately crippling him or her.
