HematomaA hematoma is a firm pocket of accumulated blood appearing as a painful lump under the skin resulting from impact damage to blood vessels. Hematomas frequently occur on or adjacent to the shin bone because of the greater forces exerted against the unpadded bone as compared to soft muscle tissue.

Healing will take a considerable length of time, during which the the leg should be elevated as much as possible to reduce the pressure on the damaged tissue exerted by the weight of the upper body blood. Since the damaged blood vessels will not be functioning properly, the part of the leg below the hematoma will not receive the normal amount of blood, and the blood that is there will not readily return to the heart. Edema, swelling of the foot and ankle, will result.

If somebody thinks they have a hematoma, it's a good idea to have a doctor look at it to be sure it actually is a hematoma, to determine if unusual measures are necessary and to explain what must be done to promote good healing. For people taking blood thinners such as Coumadin, or who have a condition that compromises their blood's ability to clot, should immediately have a doctor look at it, because continued internal bleeding is a serious consequence.

You banged your shin very hard and have a lump and pain but no bruise?

No. It has a lump, pain, and a bruise! I now pay better attention when I am walking. If I were to interpret this question, I would guess it means: Why didn't my shin bruise when I banged it, but a lump formed and it hurts?! A bruise will only form if a blood vessel is damaged. Tissue damage anywhere (shin included) will cause an inflammatory response (LUMP and PAIN). You damaged tissue, but no blood vessels.

Is a bruise caused by microorganisms?

No, a bruise or contusion is caused by direct force that breaks small capillaries. You can run into a table leg, and bruise your shin. You can fall and bruise your wrist. If the injury involves trauma or fracture, the bruising can be large and look quite ugly.

Why is a scalp injury bad?

The scalp is anywhere on your head. A contusion is merely a bruise. A bruise means some force broke capillaries right under the skin. The slight bit of bleeding leeks into the tissue, causing a "bruise". A scalp contusion is no different than having a bruise on your shin.
