The Chancellor (currently Angela Merkel) is head of the administration. The German President, whose powers are largely ceremonial and very limited, is the official head of the German state but he or she does not exercise political power and acts instead more as a figurehead (cf. the Governor General of Canada).

The Chancellor is basically the same thing as a prime minister as in other countries (e.g. Great Britain, Canada).

A Chancellor is the owner and official head of a University. In the US, the Chancellor runs the University itself. In the UK, the Chancellor tends to be a figurehead, and the day-to-day running is done by a Vice-Chancellor.

In Germany, the Chancellor is the Head of the Government (they also have a President doesn't have that much power) and is equivalent to a Prime Minister in other countries.

In the UK, the Chancellor of the Exchequer is the MP who is in charge of the Government's budget. The "Exchequer" is the government's offical bank account at the Bank of England, where money raised from taxes gets stored. There is also the Lord Chancellor who is in charge of the House of Lords.
