Citdel: A fortress for protecting a town, sometimes with a castle in its middle. Citadels are most often used to protect a garrison or political power from the inhabitants of the town it's defending.

Ancient people built citadels in Mycenae, Tiryns and Athens as a defense against themselves rather than invading foreigners. But they collapsed from warfare amongst each other and the citadels were abandoned and destroyed except for ones in Crete and Athens.
