Depression is when you get sad. It can be bad because this can turn to form into Bipolar disorder when you can stay in a house or room for hours without thinking or anything. So if you have depression - you must stay positive because lots of people have it. EDIT: Clinical depression is usually caused by an imbalance in chemicals in your brain, such as seratonin and norpenephrine. It causes extreme sadness in most cases. Depression is when someone is sad, and giving up on themselves. telling themselves theres no use, 'im worthless' stuff like that, and depression links to suicide.

A depressant is any substance that slows the operation of the central nervous system; effects of depressants may include slowing brain function, decreasing heart rate or slowing breathing among numerous others.

Depressant effects of drugs are measured by somatic effects (that is the effects on body systems) and not their effects on mood As such they have nothing at all to do with psychiatric or psychological conditions such as Major Depressive Disorder.

It is an incredibly broad category used for a wide range of purposes and includes;

- Alcohol and benzodiazepines (ie Xanax and Klonipin)

- Barbituates (such as Seconal and Phenobarbital)

- Typical and atypical sleeping pills (ie Lunesta and Ambien)

- Typical and atypical anti-psychotic drugs (ie Haldol and Risperdal)

- Antihistamines (such as Benadryl)

- Some heart medicines (such as beta-channel blockers)

- Legal narcotic drugs used for pain relief (ie Morphine and OxyContin) or to decrease severity of coughing (Codeine)

- Illegal narcotic drugs (ie opium and heroin)
