Felonies are usually very serious crimes. Example is murder. Criminal conversion can be considered a lesser "theft" crime because the person is not depriving the owner of his right of ownership. An example of criminal conversion is someone who takes a car without the knowledge of the owner, takes a joy ride, then proceeds to return the car.

It's a charge of conversion which is a felony. But that seems a bit circular, so it may help to explain the terms.

Conversion is the offense of using someone else's property without permission. It's distinct from theft in that theft is generally intended to deprive the rightful owner of the property permanently, while conversion is either specifically intended to be temporary or does not deprive the rightful owner of the property. Taking a car with the intent to keep or sell it is theft; taking a car with the intent to use it briefly ("joyriding") is conversion. Tapping into your neighbor's wireless connection without permission may also be considered conversion (you're using it without their permission, but you're not keeping them from using it at the same time),. Some jurisdictions don't make a distinction between conversion and theft, or define conversion as a subtype of theft.

A felony is a sort of measure of the severity of a crime. In many jurisdictions, in order of increasing severity there are infractions (a violation of an administrative rule, such as parking in a no-parking zone; these are generally punishable by a fine only and not really regarded as "crimes"), misdemeanors (a crime punishable by a fine and/or sometimes imprisonment for a short term ... for example, the US federal government considers crimes where the maximum term of imprisonment is less than a year to be misdemeanors)., and felonies (major crimes). In property crimes, the distinction between a misdemeanor charge and a felony charge is often made by the value of the property involved (for example, theft of a $250 bicycle being a misdemeanor while theft of a $25,000 car would be a felony).
