Cellophane is a good analogy. It is a semi-permeable membrane which is permeable to water and small molecules, but not to large molecules, and can be used to demonstrate the principal of osmosis. Cellophane is made out of plant fibers called cellulose but living membranes are made out of layers of fat cells.

-DJ Craig

Many textbooks will compare a cell membrane to the fluid mosaic model, which means that the parts of the membrane (phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins etc.) are not stuck in one place; they move around and can pass by one another while still keeping the integrity of the membrane. That is mainly for the structure, but structure always lends to function.

I think it can sometimes be referred to as plasma membrane and in plants they have a cell membrane and a cell wall (don't confuse the two)! Whoever just said that gave you the wrong answer. There is a nuclear membrane, and it's not very easy to get cell and nucleus membrane confused, so i suggest the person who first answered your question go back to second grade, because - sorry to break it to you, but - they're wrong. Please try not to take advice from them, because i can assure you, it will most likely not be valid. Now, what kind of analogy do you need? A city analogy? A country analogy? Whatever it is, let me know, and maybe i can find it for you. :)
