bittersweet chocolate is a sweetened chocolate that's heavy on the cocoa solids and light on the sugar, giving it a rich, intense chocolate flavor. Many pastry chefs prefer bittersweet to semi-sweet or sweet chocolate, but the three can be used interchangeably in most recipes. The best bittersweet chocolates contain at least 50% cocoa solids. Substitutes:semi-sweet chocolate (Very similar, but bittersweet chocolate usually has more chocolate liquor. To make semisweet chocolate more like bittersweet chocolate, add some unsweetened chocolate or cocoa powder to it.) OR sweet chocolate Courtesy of The Cook's Thesaurus website, substitutions! hmmmmm if your asking for a subsitute that's healthier then maybe instead of eating chocolate whilst watching a movie or sat in the bath or feeling hungry then try Special K bite thingys......you can get lemon, chocolate or vanilla flavours. I mean the chocolate one does have chocolate in it but its not exactly just chocolate and it only has 99 calories in it.

ALso they taste amazing!!! I eat them all the time :-)

Carob tastes similar to chocolate. It's naturally sweet and no caffeine. Only about a 100 calories per ounce and it contains some vitamin B and minerals. It's derived from a legume that comes from a coniferous tree grown in the Mediterranean, but you should be able to get it in Canada or the U.S. from a health food store or a large supermarket. For me, nothing compares to chocolate but if you're not able to have it, carob is a natural and healthy substitute.

If you can't eat Milk Chocolate because you are allergic to milk, try pure Dark Chocolate (not the regular kind you can buy in any store, but specialty dark chocolate).

If you can't eat any chocolate - poor soul - then a great alternative is carob chocolate, which is not actually chocolate. Still tastes pretty convincing, though.
