Fish sense vibrations mainly through the Lateral Line organ, which is a faintly visible line running along the sides of fish usually from the gills to the base of the tail. The Lateral Line consists of neuromasts which are in pits or canals (depending on the fish) of scales along the line. Neuromasts are basically hairs suspended in a jelly-like substance that move when hit with a pressure change that comes with vibration. This is similar to the balance organs in your inner ear or the whiskers on animals such as mice or cats.

Do fish have a lateral line system?

The lateral line is a system of sense organs; neuromasts situated along/in the lateral line detect movement and vibration in water. The system is important in schooling and predatory behaviour, as well as in general for spatial awareness. It allows detection of movement outside of the range of vision, or in conditions that reduce visibility. Blind fish will orientate towards movement in the same way as fish that are able to see, but disruption of the lateral line also disrupts the response to movement.

How is FIsh will move to the place where they are fed when you tap on the tank helpful?
