For instance, if your boss asked you what time you arrived at work and your work time started at 8:00 a.m. and you knew you were late and said 8:00 anyway, that would not be pathological. In this case, you lied to protect yourself from being reprimanded, fired, etc. Pathological liars just lie, even when there is no good reason to do so; i.e., nothing to gain and nothing to lose.
