A hard disk or hard drive is a mass storage device. It uses a stack of platters coated with a magnetic oxide to store magnetic hysteresis loops on the plater surfaces that represent data bits. They spin the stack of platters up to high RPM and fly very small magnetic heads attached to arms over the surfaces. The arms position is controlled by a precision stepper motor. The combination of the spinning disk surfaces and the heads being able to repeatedly move in tiny steps over the disk cylinders allows the heads to write/read the hysteresis loops to place/recover the data bits on/off the surfaces.

Without a hard drive, a modern computer cannot function. The hard drive holds the installed programs, data files, operating system files and archives found on a computer. When the computer needs them, it reads them off the hard drive and uses them. If it is a data file, the computer might change the file and then save it again.
