the general formula for a carboxyl group would be -COOH. Where the Carbon (C) is double bonded to one of the oxygen atoms (O) and single bonded to the remaining oxygen (O). The single bonded oxygen is also single bonded to the hydrogen atom (H). The carboxyl group is basically the amalgamation of a carbonyl group (CO) and a hydroxyl group (OH)
