Best Answer

Hyenas will virtually eat anything that is big enough to fill there stomach but small enough not to hurt them. They are terrible cowards. They tend to prey on the young of many antelope, birds, reptiles, and rodents. Contrary to common myth, although they do steal prey from other carnivores, they do not diet mainly on dead, rotting animals.

Hyenas will attack animals larger than themselves, but in groups numbering up to 20 or more. They will gang up on lions to steal prey, if they have a heavy advantage in numbers, or if male lions are not present. Usually, two or more male lions with several females will keep them at bay.

How do spotted hyenas protect themselves?

Hyenas are scavengers, they do not hunt and capture their own prey but wait round for some predator to kill something and they then come and eat the leftovers. But when hunting large prey, they rip off cunks of meat the prey to bring out it's weakness: the intestines.

What is hyena enemies?

Mainly lions. The two species compete for many of the same prey species, and the bigger lion will kill hyenas. Hyenas retaliate by mobbing lions with overwhelming numbers, and driving the cats away. Leopards also compete with hyenas, but this solo hunter usually will drag it's prey up a tree, out of reach of hyenas. A solitary hyena would have no chance against a determined leopard, but hyenas usually travel in groups, and will steal the leopard's prey if it is too large to lift into the trees.
