Knock sensor "listens" to the engine for the sound made by the engine when the octane level of the gasoline it is burning is too low for the current operating conditions. The Electronic Control Module uses this information to adjust engine spark timing to alleviate the knocking that would be caused by the air/fuel mixture igniting too soon and eventually damaging the engine. Knock sensor is on the top rear of the engine nestled behind and under the intake manifold.
LS does not have a knock sensor. GSR does have a knock sensor

The knock sensor retards the engine timing when there is a knock or ping detected. This will make the car a little sluggish. It is rare that the knock sensor goes bad.
A knock sensor is a piezoresistive sensor whose signal is varied by the amount of force or pressure applied to it.
The knock sensor is located under the Intake Manifold and there is a knock sensor 1/ knock sensor 2 on this model, the 2 is the one in the rear.
