The Liberty Ship was an "emergency" type Cargo Ship built in the US at any of 17 different shipyards between 1939 and 1945. They were built cheap and they were built fast. Each of the over 2,700 constructed was 441 feet long and 56 feet wide. They could make about 11 knots on their three cylinder steam engines and each cost about 2 million dollars. The SS Robert E. Peary required only four and a half days to build, but most were under construction for about two months. They could carry 9,000 tons of cargo each. The Master and 42 men made up the crew, but they also carried a Naval Armed Guard consisting of an Ensign and about 20 sailors.

More information:
The Liberty Ship was a class of freighter designed and built during World War 2. They were produced by Kaiser and by other shipbuilders. More than 2,700 were built to bring food, supplies, ammunition, and troops overseas.
The Liberty Ships were very inexpensive and quickly assembled. This was necessary because huge numbers of cargo ships had been lost to submarines in the first couple of years of the war.
The Liberty ship had a displacement of about 14,000 tons including around 10,000 tons of cargo. It had only 2 boilers giving it a top speed of about 11 knots. (This writer's father served on destroyer escorts leading Liberty ships across the Atlantic in 1944 - 45).
The Liberty ship was welded (not riveted) making it lighter and tougher, but the innovation came at a price. None of the many shipyards had built welded ships before. Welded lightweight ships suffered problems with cracks in the steel, causing several ships to sink.
Only two operational Liberty ships remain.
The Liberty can be compared to its successor freight ship, the Victory class. It can also be compared in some ways with the LST (Landing Ship - Tank), which was a much smaller ship but was also a standardized vessel built in large numbers for emergency needs. The Casablanca-class light escort carrier was also mass produced but only 50 were put in service (one-third of the entire US carrier fleet in the war).
SS John W. Brown ship was the one that was named the Liberty. The Liberty was a slow cargo ship that was built in large numbers for the United States merchant marines.
