This has to do with the songs played on the radio. Normally the radio plays popular songs that most people like (otherwise not many people would want to listen to the radio station). Naturally, people who listen to the radio will like these songs, which are considered mainstream music.

Underground music, on the other hand, do not receive much airplay on the radio or no airplay at all, therefore the music is not as popular as mainstream music. Thus, most people like mainstream music.

Modern music industry is a form of public brainwashing.

The word "mainstream" refers to things that are popular among the majority of people. Mainstream culture is the dominant culture in a society, and mainstream movies, books, TV shows and music are what the dominant culture likes. In contrast, "indie" (independent) movies and music are only popular among a small group of serious movie and music fans, who usually know a great deal about movies and music, and about art in general.

Mainstream movies are the movies that you hear a lot about from other people and from advertisements. They are the movies that play in all the movie theatres, and have endless trailers and advertisements, and usually bigger budgets. Some examples of recent mainstream movies are: No Strings Attached, Red, 2012, Jackass, Iron Man, Twilight, Inception, When in Rome, The Social Network, Dear John, The Wolfman, Shutter Island, She's Out of My League, Hot Tub Time Machine, the Spiderman and Batman movies, Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers, etc. Mainstream movies are sometimes called "Hollywood" movies, because Hollywood movie producers are far more interested in making movies that lots of people will see than making movies that are actually good.

The word mainstream is often used as a derogatory term, as some people consider anything mainstream to be dumbed down and marketed to the lowest common denominator (meaning, people who are neither intelligent nor educated nor cultured).

There is some truth to this, as a lot of mainstream movies, TV shows and music are unequivocally bad (i.e., Along Came Polly, Grey's Anatomy, Britney Spears), and are only enjoyed by mainstream audiences because they do not know enough about movies, music, and art in general to tell the difference between what is good and what is bad. They think a good movie is one with lots of explosions, car chases, overly-dramatic love scenes, and humor that involves people falling down stairs, getting hit in the head, or covered in disgusting substances. In contrast, they think movies that carefully explore our culture and human relationships and experiences are "boring" with "too much talking."

But there are mainstream movies (and books, TV shows and music) that are good. For example, Titanic was the biggest blockbuster of the 90s, and it is a pretty good film. Back to the Future is a mainstream movie, and it's great, as is Forrest Gump, Jaws, Silence of the Lambs, Jurassic Park, Gremlins, and many more. I haven't seen The Social Network, but I've heard it was decent. There are many examples of good mainstream movies, but there are probably more examples of bad ones.

How is the music of alternative rock glam rock and modern rock characterized?

Alternative rock has its roots in punk rock, music originally not "mainstream". However, it has become a mainstream genre; a style that owes to punk, new wave, and post punk music. Glam rock is a style that includes flashy, over the top fashions and music. The gay/camp aesthetic is predominant. Music has art pretensions; the performers often wear glitzy, shiny costumes, make up and hair. Modern rock is also post-punk; it also includes more pop elements that might not be included in the "alternative rock" genre.

Who is the target audience for the music group Dire Straits?

Dire Straits reached people who wanted something different than the norm. People tired of stadium rock and "big" rock. They were clearly different from the punk style that was also popular at the time. Heck, they were a rock band. Almost (but not quite) alternate rock, and something similar to but distinctly different from mainstream music. That is, of course, until their popularity rose and they became mainstream.

What is indie rock?

Many people tend to think indie rock is a style of music when in fact it just means that the band is with an independent (indie) music publisher and not with the bigger labels. Although you tend to find that indie labels will sign more bands/singers from alternative forms of music whereas bigger labels like to sign bands/singers from mainstream. Of course nowadays indie is mainstream. Go figure! Bands like Blur and Oasis have this style of music !!!!

Is Bollywood music rock music?

Bollywood is a term coined from Hollywood which refers to the Hindi Film Industry. Unlike popular consensus, Bollywood is not just music but the entire gambit of film making in India. As the mainstream movies in India have songs in them, people ignorantly have put them as a Bollywood genre. The songs in Bollywood can be categorized in the conventional genres like Classical, Pop, Dance and Rock. So, Bollywood music is NOT rock music.
