Midlife crisis is a psychological event which occurs in the mind at midlife. There is a noticable drop in mental and emotional energy. What use to work before no longer does. This event was studied by the psychologist Carl Jung, who referred to it as the dark night of the soul and the darkness of midlife.

While not necessarily always a crisis, it is a period of time in an individual's life where they feel emotionally barren. They are forced to reevaluate their life. Often, pondering the meaninglessness of life turns into remorse for goals not accomplished, and prior achievements are considered inadequate. Yet this time of life, called the darkness of midlife by the psychologist Carl Jung, can lead to midlife transition, if the individual is willing to listen to the voice within.

Midlife transition is a response to a psychological event which happens in an individual's mind. This event in some people triggers a midlife crisis. In others, while there is no crisis, the things from which they derived pleasure and motivation no longer work. In an effort to capture something to re-motivate them, a transition is necessary. Life transitions, such as divorce and change of job are common. The psychologist Carl Jung studied this phenomenon extensively.

The midlife crisis is a psychological event which makes the individual feel that their life is in crisis. Anxiety makes the person react differently than they normally would. Yet this is the first step to midlife transition, where real life changes occur.
