A system that uses air to power something. For instance, have you seen the tube systems at bank drive-up tellers? Air is used to push the tubes back and forth from the teller to the customer. Air is also used to power drills, sanders, grinders, and the like at garages and car body shops. Additionally, you can find pneumatic systems in large buildings or complexes. They're used there to control the air handling systems, the HVAC. Control systems decide which system valves to actuate and they are operated by pneumatics.

The brakes of an 18 wheeler has a pneumatic system. Any system needs redundancy in work needs pneumatics, because the compressor of the pneumatic system has a periodcal operations (intermittent work, not as hydraulic pump). the compressed air could be accomulated in tanks with high pressures and used even if the compressor failed.

Pneumatics means air operated and actuator is anything that does something, which is usually a piston that operates a mechanism or less frequently an air motor. Pneumatic actuation systems are typically used to automate manufacturing processes such as pushing stock bar through the headstock of an automatic lathe, or loading materials in and out of a press or mill. They are mechanical and can be driven by a single air source. Unlike stepper motors they can have 'feel' as compressed gas can have its pressure varied to hold a piece with just the right amount of force, which would not be as easy to achieve directly with other methods. Pressure, flow rates etc are easy to adjust on a pneumatic system.
