A polemic is an argument on a controversial subject that often attacks long held assumptions. They are often a walk through of new ideas about long held societal beliefs. They often do not rely on newly researched facts or figures, but instead work with commonly know information, but peer at these facts with a new perspective that turns their assumed meaning on its head. For example, the last one I read was regarding happiness. The author advocated against the pursuit of happiness, because he believed such a pursuit often led to unrealistic expectation and likely failure, which would then lead to a depressed attitude. He advocated, therefore for embracing our sadder nature.
