A prophetess is the same as a prophet. They are persons who know by personal revelation from the Holy Ghost know that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God. A person who has received such knowledge may be classed as a prophet, for they are in a position to receive more revelations.

Some believe that prophetess is a feminine word for prophet but this is incorrect. When you look up the Greek word for prophet it is 'prophetes' and the Hebrew word is 'nabiy', which means Prophet or one who speaks forth or openly. The Greek word for prophetess is 'prophetis' and the Hebrew word is 'nebiyah', which means a companion and/or follower of a prophet. No gender is listed... either you are a companion and/or a follower of a Prophet.

Most prophets in The Bible were men that took the message that God gave them and preached it to whom God wanted it preached to. A prophetess would have been the female counterpart of this.
