Steel pennies were made in the US in 1943, and are worth between a few cents (in circulated condition) and a few dollars (in uncirculated condition).

1946 cents are made of bronze. If you actually have a 1946 US penny made of steel, you either have a fake or an extremely valuable (i.e., thousands of dollars) error coin. Check the date, and if it is indeed 1946, take it to a reputable coin dealer in your area for an evaluation. You can make a preliminary test by seeing if the coin sticks strongly to a magnet. If it does, you can at least know it's made of a magnetic metal of which steel is one possibility. If it doesn't stick, it's definitely not steel, and if it sticks very weakly your coin is almost certainly just plated.

If your set is from 1946 there should be only 3 different coins - no mint mark, D, and S.

If they're circulated they're worth less than a dime each. Uncirculated, about 35 cents

The value of a silver dime from 1946 can vary depending on its condition and rarity. As of now, the value of a 1946 silver dime in circulated condition is typically around $2-3, mainly based on its silver content. However, if the coin is in mint condition or has any unique characteristics, its value could be higher.

I recently purchased a 1946 Roosevelt dime on eBay for about $4, plus shipping and handling of about $2.50. It was a beautiful coin, with little or no wear. It may or may not have been in circulation, but if it was in circulation, it was not for long. If the coin had been showing a lot of wear and tear, with scratches and gouges in it, the value would have been no more than about $1.

Silver dimes and silver quarters, like the silver half-dollars dated 1964 and earlier, contain 90% silver. Silver dollars dated 1935 and earlier are also 90% silver . The only pure (99.99%) silver coins are the modern "silver American eagles" that are silver dollars dating from about 1988 to the present.

You should check with the professional numismatists about silver content and coin values. They can be found on the internet easily. Go to eBay to bid on coins! Silver Eagles were minted from 1986.

That's Miss Liberty herself, not a "lady head" - - - but it can't be on a 1946 dime because all dimes from that year to the present carry a picture of Franklin Roosevelt. Miss Liberty was on dimes issued up till 1945.

The 1946 Jefferson nickel is very common and many are still found in circulation today. Most show heavy ware and are only face value. Even typical uncirculated coins are less than 1 dollar.
