The Gibbs free energy for the reaction is negative.
a non spontaneous reaction is a reaction that doesnt occur naturally and it normally tends to favor the reactants of a chemical reaction. Another thing is that it doesnt really produce free energy
the gibbs free energy for the reaction is positive
This is a reaction that takes place on its own without an external force and another reaction needed to drive it. (It might not take place very quickly, however.) An iron nail rusting is spontaneous. Wood burning is spontaneous (even though you you often would use a spark to start it burning, it keeps on burning by itself.) Recharging a battery is a non-spontaneous reaction. It requires a continual supply of current to keep the reaction going.
OMG Why do so many people have different opinions.
For my apex question: Which of the following describes a spontaneous reaction?
answer: The Gibbs free energy for the reaction is negative.
In order to determine whether a chemical reaction is spontaneous, one has to consider both entropy and the enthalpy of the reaction in the form of Gibbs free energy. When Gibbs Free Energy takes a negative value, the reaction is said to be spontaneous and will freely occur without further input. If Gibbs Free Energy is positive, energy in some form will need to be put into the system to get it to react (electrolysis)
G = dH - TdS
dH= enthalpy ( in joules)
dS = entropy (jol/K)
T= temperature in K
G = gibbs free energy (jol/K)
These are all values found in the index of a chemistry book
To calculate for a chemical reaction, one considers the combined values of H and S for the products and reactants in order to derive the equation for the full gibbs free energy.
And always remember reactants - products
ex 2Na + Cl2------> 2NaCl
G= H - ST
g=[ (2dH NaCl) - (2dH Na + dH Cl2) ] - 273K[ (2dS NaCl) - (2dS Na + dS Cl2)]
If H were to take a high positive value, the reaction would need a lot of heat in order to make the value of TS greater than the value of H so that G is negative.
If the value of S is very large negativevalue then a really small T value would need to be achieved to compensate.
A reaction that occurs without the input of energy from an external source. For example, it doesn't need heat to start it, it just happens
A spontaneous reaction does not need a source of external energy.
both versions are right, just look at the one you have and that one should be correct
One that occurs without added energy - apex
A reaction that produces heat
It is not spontaneous.
The value isn't significant, but ∆G must be negative for a spontaneous reaction.
spontaneous
The reaction is spontaneous only at high temperatures.
a non spontaneous reaction is a reaction that doesnt occur naturally and it normally tends to favor the reactants of a chemical reaction. Another thing is that it doesnt really produce free energy
spontaneous redox reaction
A reaction that produces heat
Which of the following (what)?
It is not spontaneous.
the reaction is always spontaneous :) youre welcome =D i just took this on apex, the correct answer is the reaction is spontaneous only at high temperatures.
Spontaneous
A Spontaneous Redox Reaction
It is not spontaneous.
If you hold a match to the paper, then yes, the reaction is spontaneous.
The reaction is spontaneous.
Hf, products > hf, reactants
