A stair stringer is what holds up the stairs. Usually, a staircase has at least two of these supports to hold it up.
Tread, riser, stringer, spindle, newel post, hand rail. fillet, shoe moulding, dowelling, screws, glue.
stringer is the support piece, usually under both sides and one in the middle riser is the front piece tread is the flat piece you walk on
A Stringer is the long piece that the stair treads attach to on either side, and which goes diagonally up the wall. The handrails sit atop vertical supports which are secured into the stringer as well. As an addition, after Much researching, I conclude that the word has its origin in Italian - Stringa - which means to join together (and England was invaded by the Romans for a long time). And could also have some Danish (Viking) roots as the Danish word for Rise is Stigning, which could easily have been bastardized into the English Stringer. But as the Italians/Romans were known as stair makers, I'd go with Italian roots for the word. Michael Ross

Well this is a very simple problem if you read it correctly. Using the Pythagorean Theorem, you can solve it very quickly. The problem creates a triangle. The 8 feet forms the smallest leg, the 10 feet forms the larger leg, and the length of the stair stringer forms the hypotenuse, or in this case x. (When I first read the problem, I made the mistake of thinking of it as a Pythagorean Triple, and 6 feet quickly popped into my head from a 3,4,5 triangle. But the problem, if not read carefully can throw you off as to which numbers go to which sides.) Using the Pythagorean Theorem, you conclude to... 82 + 102 = x2 64 + 100 = x2 164 = x2 2 square roots of 41 = x, or approximately 12.81 feet.
Your run should always be longer than the rise. Current International Residential Code states the rise cannot be greater than 7-3/4" and the run cannot be less than 10". A common stair stringer has a 7" rise with a 11" run. rip your stair tread to 12" , this will over hang the run on the stringer by 1", when you install your toe kicks, use 3/4" material and you will wind up with a 1/4" overhang on each tread. Of course there are different ways to do this, but I believe this is most common.
