A Zener diode is a type of diode that sends current in the forward way like a normal diode, but also in the reverse direction if there is voltage that is larger than the breakdown voltage which is also known as "Zener voltage". The apparatus was named after Clarence Zener, who discovered this electrical property.
A zener diode (sic) is a semiconductor diode that is designed to have a specific reverse breakdown voltage, and not to destruct when it reaches it. It can thus be wired in series with a resistor to generate a regulated voltage using the principal of a shunt regulator.
I think you mean a 'Zener' diode. I diode used for voltage regulation.
It is designed to block current when reverse biased until a given voltage is reached. It is then designed to break down and pass current under control.
In this way it is used as a voltage reference. The designed voltage is usually written on the package.

Clarence Zener is a physicist from the United States who is credited with the invention of the Zener diode. He studied subjects like superconductivity and diffusion.
zener diode is a special type of pn junction diode that work in breakdown region . There are two types of brekdowns in zener i.e avlanche breakdown and zener breakdown depending on the doping concentration. A zener diode in an on state can be considered as a voltage source ,equal to its zener voltage n hence act as an voltage regulator
A zener diode has a relatively constant reverse voltage, at the designated zener voltage. If you had a circuit, say, with an AC source, a resistor, and a zener, the waveform across the zener would be the AC source, clipped at the reverse bias zener voltage, and clipped again at the forward bias voltage, typically about 0.7 V.
A zener diode has a relatively flat voltage to current curve when reverse biased. Within limits, you can consider that the voltage across the zener diode is constant. You can use the zener as the primary regulator, so long as you consider the power requirements and dissipation of both the zener and the load, and you do not overload the zener. More often, the zener is used as a voltage reference in a larger power supply that uses other components, linear or switched, to supply the load.
