In political theory, alienation is the Marxist concept that a worker can be separated from the tools he needs to do his work. This allows him to be exploited by members of other classes. For example, prior to the industrial age, blacksmiths owned their own tools. This meant that they could set their own rates for doing work, travel from town to town as they chose, and generally have control over their lives and their employment. As a result, blacksmiths were often well-to-do and respected members of the community. After industrialization, smith work (the creation and maintenance of iron tools and objects) was largely replaced by industrial production - it was cheaper and easier to manufacture iron goods in in large quantities in factories rather than piece by piece in smithies. However, factories are extremely expensive to build, and so factories were owned by wealthy investors. Blacksmiths could not compete with factory goods, and so their choice was to leave the profession or give up their tools and work in the factories. this alienation from the tools needed to do the work meant that the wealthy factory owners could decide how much to pay their laborers and where the laborers could do their work. A job that used to be a well-respected and profitable profession was now performed by low-paid, unskilled laborers, with profits going to the investors instead of the workers.

In family law, alienation is withholding affection or turning family members against each other. That is seen during a divorce where the children are forced to take sides and withhold affection from the other parent or from siblings and other kinfolk who side with that parent.
