Molds are made from a master, the metal is heated into a liquid and poured into the molds, once their cool they remove them and polish them smooth and plate them with 24-karat gold, then buff to a high gloss.

The five spokes each represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.

In 2016, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retained the services of Polich Tallix Fine Aft Foundry, based in Rock Tavern. N.Y. The Oscars are now made of bronze with a 24-karat gold finish.
