Faster typing, super powers and the ability to kill with the tips of your finger.

The more familiar querty keyboard was actually designed to slow down typing, since the original, mechanical typewriters had a tendency to jam if you typed on them too quickly. Now that we have such things as computer keyboards which never jam no matter how quickly you type, there is a use for keyboards that are designed to make it easier to type quickly - except for the fact that we are already trained on the querty keyboard and have developed reflexes for using it.

Supposedly the Dvorak keyboard was designed so that people who were learning how to type would be able to find the most useful characters more easily. This is as opposed to the Qwerty keyboard (which is commonly used) which is designed to separate more used characters so that the letter printing arms on early mechanic typewriters wouldn't get stuck when typing too fast. For a simple explanation of the Dvorak keyboard's many advantages (there is practically nothing about the design that's worse than the QWERTY design) and its history, go to the related links (links) below.

---- An advantage of the Dvorak keyboard is that people who are learning to type such as beginners can find the most useful characters or keys more easily than most other keyboards. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It was so people who are learning how to type would be able to find the keys faster .

The QWERTY keyboard that we all know and love (or hate) was developed back in the days of the mechanical typewriter and was laid out in such a way so as to reduce jamming of the machinery when typing fast.

Some say (and this may or may not be true) that QWERTY was designed to -slow typists down- to a speed that the machine could cope with, as it puts the most-used letters in the English alphabet scattered about rather than on the home row where you might expect them to be for efficiency's sake.

The DVORAK keyboard layout was designed as an alternative to QWERTY as it was thought that, with modern hardware behind the keyboard, typists should be able to type faster and more efficiently if the most-used letters were arranged differently. There has been much debate over whether or not DVORAK is actually an improvement over QWERTY. There have been studies which show that it is, and others which show the opposite. Ultimately it is a matter of personal preference.

---- I wouldn't say that querty was designed to slow people down, although it still does just that.

The world record typist, Barbara Blackburn, used nothing but Dvorak. And I'm using right now. (see links below).

The most important advantage is that the Dvorak keyboard was designed to help typists type faster, as the standard QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow typists down so that the typewriters wouldn't get stuck.

These are some of the design advantages:

- Commonly typed letters are slightly shifted so that the majority of the typing

is done by the right hand. The QWERTY keyboard has it so that the left hand

has to move slightly more. It helps because most people are right-handed.

- The most common letters (H, G, B, P, U, K, E, T are just a few)

are placed either near or on the home row, requiring less movement.

Other common letters such as S are placed near the sides so that they are

also easy to get to.

- Awkward strokes (Such as the word Minimum) that require excessive

jumping between rows and back rarely occur on the Dvorak keyboard

because it was designed to prevent just that.

The advantages aren't unknown. Barbara Blackburn, the fastest English

typist in the world, also uses a Dvorak Keyboard.

The Dvorak keyboard is said to allow users to type easier and faster and with less errors and risk of RSI. The Qwerty keyboard is nonetheless more popular than Dvorak.
