A city state began as a farming community with a fortress on high ground (acropolis) for defence against marauders. A city developed around the acropolis, and so the area became an independent miniature country - a city-state. These grew up, became over-populated as their land was limited, so they sent out surplus populations to found new city-states. The Greek world expanded to over 2 thousand city-states stretching around the Mediterranean and Black seas.in southern Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor and southern Russia.
