An epiphany is a moment of sudden understanding or revelation.
An Epiphany is basically a moment where you have realized something, pretty much like an "Ah ha!" moment. Or, it could be to know or be aware of something.
In Western Christianity it is/begins Jan.6th. Epiphany means to reveal of make known. It originates from the Wise Men's visit to the baby Jesus thereby making him known to the world. Religous doctrines define the period in various time spans. For some Protestant faiths it begins Jan.6 and continues until Ash Wednesday. The word "epiphany" also means to have a sudden understanding or insight. Epiphany happens 12 days after Christmas (usually January 6), and it is to celebrate the visit of the 3 wise men to the infant Jesus.
The "Epiphany" or "Theophany" is celebrated in the Western Church on January 6th, twelve days after Christmas. Some of the Eastern rites celebrate "Epiphany" on January 19th in accordance with their latter observation of Christmas. Epiphany means "the manifestation" and commemorates the visit of the three wise men who adored Christ as God and presented Him with three gifts that are often analyzed by exegetes for their heavy symbolism pertaining to Christ as Prophet, Priest and King. Although the feast happens so soon after Christmas, it is not actually known how much time passed between Christ's birth and the kings' visit, for The Bible speaks of them finding the child in a home versus a stable; many Christians have become used to the idea of the Kings dropping by on Christmas night itself thanks to TV productions and Cartoons depicting the Christmas story. Most Bible scholars of centuries renown put the Epiphany a year after Christ's birth, but no exact time period is known.
Epiphany is January 6. The Magi are remembered, as is the baptism of Jesus Christ. The divinity of Christ was revealed at his baptism. and the manifestation of the Messiah to the Gentiles is commemorated.
Epiphany for the year 2009 will be on Sunday, January 11th. This is when the catholic church celebrates the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Christmas season comes to an end. However, not always falls on the 11th of January, it depends on when Christmas day falls. Double check, but I think it's always on third Sunday following Christmas.
A sudden insight, a sudden realization of something important, probably life-changing.
