A monopoly is one entities complete control over the supply of a particular good or service. Governments or Businesses can have monopolies in markets. Classic examples include telephone companies or railroad companies having monopolies over their respective industries however some of these examples may no longer hold true. A more recent example is the satellite radio industry. When XM and Sirius merged they became a US monopoly.
